This past weekend a design legend passed away at the age of 91. Many of you may have never heard his name but I’d bet that all of you have seen (or even owned) his famous I ❤️ NY design.
You guys know how much I love design history, so I have prepared (well, Jamie helped) some slides about Milton Glasers life and works.
A New Yorker who went to Cooper Union Art School (1951) and went on to co-found Push Pin Studio (1954), New York Magazine (1968) and many more!
Created over 100 posters in his career, his most famous is this Bob Dylan Poster in 1966
Created as a keepsake for Dylans Greatest Hits album. It helped shape the idea that posters could be for personal use and not always for a public showing. The artistic inspiration is swirling around Dylan’s head. These Islamic painting inspired colors were not just for a psychedelic trip, like much of the art of the time.
His most famous work is the I Love NY design (1976/77)- Department for Economic Development wanted to promote NYC which had fallen on hard times in the 70’s. He drew the idea in the back of a cab on the way to the meeting. He did it pro-bono to help the city. He never held the rights even though it generates over $30 million a year!
